LESSON 2: THE MAP OF EVERYTHING — THE STATE VECTOR

In Lesson 1, we learned that large groups behave in smooth, predictable ways.
But to predict anything, we need a map to tell us where the group is right now.

If you want to predict the weather, you need to know today’s temperature, pressure, and humidity.
To predict a society, we need to know its vital signs.


1. The “Vital Signs” of a Society

Think of a doctor checking a patient. They don’t guess. They measure:

  • Heart Rate
  • Blood Pressure
  • Temperature

For a whole country, our “patient,” we need our own set of vital signs. In CMH, we call the complete set of these signs the State Vector and give it a simple code name: X(t).

The (t) just means “at time t” — right now, this year, this month.


2. Building Our State Vector: The 5 Categories

We can’t measure everything, so we pick the 25 most important “vital signs” and group them into 5 categories.

Here is our CMH State Vector X(t):

Category D — DEMOGRAPHICS (The Body)

  1. Total Population: How many people?
  2. Median Age: Is the population young or old?
  3. Youth Bulge: % of young adults (18-30).
  4. Urbanization: % living in cities.
  5. Life Expectancy: Average lifespan.

Category E — ECONOMICS (The Metabolism)

  1. GDP per Capita: Average income.
  2. Gini Coefficient: Inequality (0 = perfect equality, 1 = one person has everything).
  3. Unemployment Rate: % without work.
  4. National Debt: % of GDP.
  5. Inflation Rate: How fast prices are rising.

Category P — POLITICS (The Brain)

  1. Regime Type: Scale from -10 (full autocracy) to +10 (full democracy).
  2. State Solvency: Can the government pay its bills? (High/Low).
  3. Elite Cohesion: Are the rulers united or fighting? (Scale 1-10).
  4. Corruption Index: Perceived level of corruption.
  5. Political Violence: Deaths from conflict this year.

Category S — SOCIETY (The Nervous System)

  1. Trust in Institutions: Do people trust the government/media?
  2. Social Mobility: Can a poor person become rich?
  3. Education Index: Average level of schooling.
  4. Internet Penetration: % of people online.
  5. Crime Rate: Major crimes per 1000 people.

Category Ψ — PSYCHOLOGY (The Mood)

  1. Future Outlook: Are people optimistic? (Survey data).
  2. Perceived Fairness: “Is the system rigged?” (Survey).
  3. National Morale: General pride/confidence.
  4. Social Contagion: Speed of rumor/spread of ideas.
  5. Collective Stress: Composite of anxiety, uncertainty.

So, X(t) is just a list of 25 numbers.
X(2024) = [ 8.1B, 31, 0.18, 0.57, 73.2, ... ] (and so on for all 25).


3. Why 25? And Why These?

The Goldilocks Principle:

  • Too few signs (5): We miss too much. It’s like a doctor only taking your temperature.
  • Too many signs (1000): We get lost in the data. It’s like a doctor running every possible test — confusing and noisy.
  • Just right (~25): Captures the major systems (body, brain, metabolism, mood) without drowning in detail.

These 25 are chosen because:

  1. They can be measured (we have data for them).
  2. They have been shown by history to matter for big events like revolutions or collapse.
  3. They influence each other (e.g., high unemployment → lower morale → less trust in institutions).

4. The “Now” and “Next” Rule

The core idea of CMH is this:

If we know X(t) (the state NOW), we can build a machine (a model) to make a good guess about X(t+1) (the state NEXT year).

It’s not magic. It’s like watching a ball roll down a hill:

  • NOW (X(t)): You see the ball’s position, slope of the hill, wind speed.
  • NEXT (X(t+1)): Using physics (gravity, friction), you can predict where the ball will be a second from now.

Our “physics” for societies is a set of simple rules about how these 25 numbers change over time.


5. A Simple Rule in Action: The “Youth Bulge” Rule

Let’s take two of our vital signs and connect them with a simple rule.

Vital Signs Used:

  • D3. Youth Bulge (YB) = % of population aged 18-30.
  • E8. Unemployment Rate (UR) = % of young adults without jobs.

Historical Rule (Observed):

If (Youth Bulge > 20%) AND (Youth Unemployment > 25%), then the probability of major social unrest within 5 years increases by 60%.

This is not fate. It’s probability.
The model says: “When these two conditions are true, the system is under pressure. An eruption is more likely.”

Why does this rule work?
Because of human nature: a large group of young, energetic people with no stake in the system (no job, no future) becomes a powerful force for change—whether for good (innovation) or ill (unrest).


Your CMH Homework:

  1. Diagnose Your Own Country: Look at the 5 categories (D, E, P, S, Ψ). For your country, can you guess if each category is generally Healthy, Stable, or Stressed right now? No numbers needed—just your general sense.
  2. Find a Feedback Loop: Pick two vital signs from different categories that you think influence each other.
    Example: “If Unemployment (E8) rises, then Crime Rate (S20) probably also rises a year later.”
    What’s your proposed loop?
  3. Question the Model: What’s one major vital sign you think is missing from our list of 25? Why would it be important?
