Was the French Revolution inevitable? In 1788, most observers saw no revolution coming. Eighteen months later, the Bastille had fallen and the ancien régime was collapsing. Computational Macrohistory takes a clear position: macro-historical events emerge from identifiable structural causes—causes that shift probabilities in measurable ways. This is Axiom A3: Structural Causality.

From Narrative to Scientific Explanation

The core formula is deceptively simple: P(E | X) ≠ P(E). Knowing structural conditions changes the probability of events. Revolutions aren’t random bolts from the blue—they’re more likely under certain configurations of demographics, economics, politics, and social factors. This doesn’t mean events are predetermined. Probability 0.6 is not probability 1.0. But structural pressures create situations where certain outcomes become significantly more likely than baseline.
