The Foundation of Everything: Statistical Aggregation (Axiom A1)

Every historian faces an uncomfortable question: why study the past at all? If history is just “one damn thing after another”—a sequence of unique, unrepeatable events—then the past teaches us nothing about the future. Computational Macrohistory makes a different bet. We bet that the past is informative—not because history repeats exactly, but because systems facing similar structural conditions tend to produce statistically similar outcomes.

The Mathematics of Learning from History

Axiom A2—Historical Ergodicity—is perhaps our most controversial claim. Borrowed from statistical mechanics, ergodicity means that observing one system over a long time gives the same statistical information as observing many similar systems at one moment. For history, this translates to a powerful proposition: Rome’s 500-year trajectory tells us the same statistical story as comparing multiple empires at similar developmental stages.

But this claim comes with a crucial caveat: ergodicity holds only conditional on stable structural parameters. When the deep “rules of the game” change—mode of production, technological level, institutional configuration—historical comparisons lose their validity.
