Why You Can Learn From the Past (Even If It’s Not Identical)
Imagine you’re a wildlife biologist studying bears. You spend a year observing a grizzly bear named Bruno in the Rocky Mountains. You learn what he eats, where he sleeps, how he reacts to threats. The next year, you go to Alaska to study a different grizzly, named Kodiak. Is your knowledge useless because it’s a different bear? Of course not! Both are grizzlies. They share the same biology, needs, and instincts. What you learned from Bruno gives you a huge head start in understanding Kodiak.
Axiom A2 – The Conditional Historical Ergodicity Axiom applies this same logic to civilizations and empires. It’s the rule that says history is not just one damn thing after another, but a source of repeatable, testable lessons.
It states:
Given a set of stable structural constraints, the historical trajectories of comparable systems belong to the same statistical class.
In simple terms: If two societies are built on similar “foundations,” their stories will follow similar types of plots, even if the characters and settings are different.
Diving Deeper: The Machinery of Historical Comparison
1. The Core Concept: Ergodicity
This is a fancy word from physics and statistics. An ergodic system is one where, if you watch it for long enough, it will eventually visit all its possible states. More importantly for us, it means that the average over time equals the average over space.
- Time Average: Watch one civilization for 1,000 years and calculate, say, its average frequency of civil wars.
- Space (Ensemble) Average: Look at 100 different civilizations, all with similar foundations, at a single point in their development (e.g., 200 years after forming an empire) and calculate their frequency of civil war.
Axiom A2 says that, under the right conditions, these two averages will converge. What happened over time in Ancient Rome can tell us what might happen across different empires at a similar stage.
2. The Crucial Condition: “Structural Constraints”
This is the most important word in the axiom: Conditional. We are not saying all societies are the same! We are saying that if their deep, slow-moving structures are comparable, then their dynamics will be comparable.
What are “structural constraints”?
- Geography: Are they an island or a land empire? A river valley or a desert?
- Technology Base: Do they have the plow, the steam engine, the microchip?
- Energy Regime: Do they run on human/animal muscle, coal, or oil?
- Information Technology: Do they have oral tradition, writing, the printing press, the internet?
- Core Institutions: What are their fundamental rules about property, inheritance, and power?
When these “rules of the game” are similar for two societies, Axiom A2 says we are allowed to compare them and learn from one to understand the other.
3. The Mathematical Promise
The formal statement is:
Translation: If you take a measurement (f) of a society (like its level of inequality or political instability) and average it over a very long time (the left side), you will get the same result as if you took that measurement across a large number of similar societies at random moments (the right side, the expectation E over distribution P).
This is the license to do comparative history scientifically.
Powerful Consequences: The End of “Uniqueness” as an Argument
What It ALLOWS Us To Do:
- Legitimate Cross-Comparison: We can meaningfully ask: “What does the decline of the Roman Empire tell us about potential pressures on modern superpowers?” Not because the US is Rome, but because both are large, complex, hegemonic empires facing internal stratification and external rivals.
- Build a Science, Not Just Stories: We can move from narrating “what happened” to modeling “what tends to happen when.” We can search for social laws.
- Use the Past as a Data Laboratory: We only have one future to test our predictions, but we have thousands of years of past societal experiments. Axiom A2 says this past data is valid input for our models, provided we control for structural conditions.
What It FORBIDS Us From Doing:
- The “Snowflake” Defense: We cannot dismiss a comparison by just saying “but every society is unique!” While true in detail, Axiom A2 asserts that at the macro-statistical level, meaningful similarities exist if foundations are aligned.
- Pure Historicism: The idea that every event is so deeply embedded in its specific context that no general lessons can be drawn is rejected. CMH seeks the general patterns within the specific contexts.
- Unconditional Predictions: We cannot say “All empires fall in 300 years.” We can say, “For empires with a centralized bureaucracy, a professional military, and a certain scale, the probability of major administrative fragmentation shows a sharp increase between years 200-400 of their existence.”
Real-World Example: The “Saddle” of State Formation
Historians and anthropologists like Peter Turchin have observed a fascinating pattern. When small, competing chiefdoms (like early Sumerian city-states or Warring States in China) consolidate into a large, unified empire, there is often a violent, unstable period right after unification.
Why? The old, local loyalties and power structures don’t vanish overnight. The new central authority must fight to establish a monopoly on force and legitimacy. This creates a predictable crisis—a “saddle” of instability on the graph of social cohesion.
This pattern has been observed in:
- The transition from the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire (the crises of the 1st century BC).
- The unification of China under the Qin Dynasty (followed quickly by rebellion and the Han rise).
- The early Caliphate after Muhammad’s death (the Ridda wars and succession conflicts).
These are vastly different cultures, religions, and times. But their structural condition was the same: recent, forceful unification of previously fragmented polities into a large-scale state. Axiom A2 tells us it is not a coincidence they faced a similar type of crisis. We can therefore model this “unification crisis” as a probable phase for any society undergoing that specific transformation.
The Philosophical Core: History as a Natural Science
Axiom A2 is the bold claim that human societies are, at a macro level, phenomena of nature. Just as a physicist can run experiments with different samples of hydrogen and expect them to behave according to the same laws, the CMH practitioner can look at different samples of “agrarian empires” or “industrial democracies” and search for their governing statistical laws.
It bridges the chasm between the particular and the general. It tells us that Bruno the Bear and Kodiak the Bear are both grizzlies, and that Rome and Han China were both classical agrarian empires. By studying one, we learn about the category itself. This turns history from a gallery of beautiful, unique portraits into a living laboratory for understanding the dynamics of collective human life.
