Why “History Just Happened” is Not a Scientific Answer
Imagine you’re a doctor. A patient arrives with a high fever, a rash, and swollen glands. You have two choices:
- You can write in your report: “Event: The patient became sick on Tuesday.”
- Or, you can run tests, discover the Epstein-Barr virus, and write: “Diagnosis: Infectious mononucleosis, caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.”
The first statement is just a description of an event. The second is an explanation based on underlying causes. Medicine became a real science when it moved from just describing symptoms to finding their biological causes.
Axiom A3 – The Structural Causality Axiom demands the same shift for the science of history. It declares that major historical events are not magical or random; they are the visible symptoms of deeper, measurable conditions.
It states:
Macro-historical events are not primitive entities; they emerge from causal relationships between observable structural variables.
In simple terms: Big things like revolutions, golden ages, or collapses don’t “just happen.” They are caused by the state of the world before them—things like how wealth is divided, how many people there are, what technology exists, and what the climate is doing.
Diving Deeper: From Narrative to Network
1. Rejecting “Event-ism”
Traditional history often focuses on the event: “The Fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD.” This makes it seem like a single, dramatic point. But what does “fall” even mean? Did the empire vanish on that day? No. The political center in the West collapsed after centuries of gradual change: armies becoming more local, taxes becoming harder to collect, elites moving to country estates, climate pressures on frontiers.
Axiom A3 says: The “event” is just the moment a slow-moving process becomes obvious to everyone. The real story is in the processes.
2. The Mathematical Heart: Conditional Probability
The axiom is formalized with a powerful idea from probability:

- P(E) is the plain, unconditional probability of an event E (like a revolution) happening at random.
- P(E | X) is the conditional probability of that event happening given that we know the state of some structural variable X (e.g., we know that wealth inequality is above a certain level).
- ≠ means “is not equal to.”
The equation says: The chance of a revolution is different when we know the level of inequality than when we don’t. If knowing X changes the probability, then X is causally relevant to E.
This moves us from storytelling (“The king was unjust!”) to measurement (“When the Gini coefficient for land ownership exceeds 0.65 and the youth population is larger than the economy can absorb, the probability of mass rebellion within a decade exceeds 70%”).
3. Multi-Factorial and Non-Linear Causality
The axiom doesn’t say there’s one cause. It says events emerge from relationships between variables.
- Multi-Factorial: A revolution isn’t caused only by inequality, or only by a food shortage, or only by an idea. It’s caused by a combination of these stresses pushing a social system past its breaking point.
- Non-Linear: This is crucial. Adding a little more inequality might do nothing for a long time… until it crosses a hidden threshold, and then the system flips dramatically. It’s like adding sand to a pile grain by grain. For a long time, nothing happens. Then, one single grain causes a massive avalanche. The cause (adding sand) is constant, but the effect (avalanche) is sudden and disproportionate.
Powerful Consequences: A New Kind of Historical Explanation
What It ALLOWS Us To Do:
- Identify Root Causes, Not Just Triggers: We can distinguish between the structural causes (high inequality, state weakness) and the triggering event (a bad harvest, a foolish decree). The trigger is the spark; the structural causes are the dry timber.
- Build Causal Models, Not Just Timelines: We can create diagrams showing how variables like “elite overproduction” -> “intra-elite conflict” -> “state fiscal crisis” -> “loss of military control” are linked. This is a causal network, not a chronology.
- Move Beyond “Great Men” and “Ideas”: Individuals and ideas matter, but Axiom A3 insists we ask: Under what structural conditions does a “great man” succeed in taking power? Under what conditions do revolutionary ideas find a massive audience? The answer always lies in the prior state of the system.
What It FORBIDS Us From Doing:
- Accepting “Accident” or “Miracle” as Explanation: Saying “the empire fell because of bad luck” or “the Renaissance happened because people suddenly became geniuses” is forbidden in CMH. We must search for the variables that made the system vulnerable to that “luck” or ripe for those geniuses to flourish.
- Confusing Correlation with Causation: Just because two things happen together (e.g., sunspot activity and war) doesn’t mean one causes the other. Axiom A3 forces us to build a plausible, testable model of how a change in X could lead to a change in the probability of E.
- Treating Narrative as Explanation: A vivid story of court intrigues leading to a war is not a scientific explanation. It is data. The explanation is: “In monarchical systems where succession rules are ambiguous, the probability of civil war upon the death of a ruler increases as the number of eligible heirs increases.”
Real-World Example: The French Revolution
The traditional narrative focuses on events: The storming of the Bastille! The Reign of Terror! The rise of Napoleon!
Axiom A3 asks us to look at the structural variables in the decades before 1789:
- Fiscal Stress (Variable X₁): The French state was bankrupt from wars (like aiding the American Revolution). Its tax system was archaic and inefficient, unable to tap the wealth of the nobility.
- Elite Overproduction (Variable X₂): There was a growing class of educated, ambitious commoners (lawyers, writers, officials) blocked from top positions by the nobility. This created intense intra-elite competition.
- Popular Immiseration (Variable X₃): A series of bad harvests drove up bread prices, pushing the urban poor and peasants to the brink.
- Ideological Shift (Variable X₄): Enlightenment ideas provided a new framework for criticizing the old order.
None of these alone caused the revolution. But their interaction created a condition where the system was highly unstable. The event “French Revolution” was the emergent result of this unstable structural configuration. The triggering spark—the calling of the Estates-General—was just the grain of sand that caused the avalanche.
A CMH model would not try to simulate the speeches of Robespierre. It would simulate how the variables X₁, X₂, X₃, and X₄ evolved over time, and calculate the rising probability of a systemic state collapse.
The Philosophical Core: Seeking the Grammar of History
Axiom A3 is the commitment to historical materialism in a mathematical, testable form. It asserts that history has a grammar. The “nouns” are the structural variables (population, resources, technology). The “verbs” are the dynamic relationships between them (competition, innovation, exploitation). The “sentences” are the macro-historical events we read about.
By insisting that every event must be connected to prior structural conditions, it weaves the tapestry of history into a coherent, analyzable whole. It tells us that if we want to understand the storm, we must map the pressure systems. If we want to prevent future avalanches, we must measure the steepness of the slope and the dryness of the snow.
